The AI Sound technology in Philips HearLink hearing aids was a milestone in signal processing and improves speech in noise with great effect. SoundProtect is a newly developed feature that cleans the signal path of unwanted noise. This enables optimized signal quality for AI Noise Suppression (AI-SU) and clearer sound for the user.
SoundProtect detects and identifies unwanted and annoying noises such as wind noise, contact noise, and soft as well as loud impulse noise. The system constantly searches for these noises and detects them using various strategies. Wind noise affects the front and rear microphones differently, creating an uncorrelated noise. This is caused by air turbulence hitting the microphones at different times. Uncorrelated noise also occurs during operation or contact with the hearing aid. Impulse noise, on the other hand, is often characterized by its contrast with the background noise level and its rapid onset.
Two strategies are used to combat these noises. Wind noise is detected and analyzed based on the noise level in both microphones. SoundProtect then adaptively selects the microphone with the lowest noise level for each band, ensuring that the cleanest signal is always fed to the AI-SU.
The AI-SU is then able to detect wind noise in both microphones.
The HearLink 40 is also sustainably designed to reduce environmental impact. It uses at least 50% recycled plastic in the packaging of the hearing aids and charging stations, avoids hazardous materials, and optimizes the energy efficiency of the charging stations for the rechargeable hearing aids.
